Principal Charged With Raping Kid In Office

(AURN) -- A former North Carolina middle school principal  is accused of sexually assaulting a student while the boy's unsuspecting parent was outside the room.

49-year old David Ellis Edwards faces multiple charges, including second-degree forcible sex offense, sexual acts with a student, taking indecent liberties with a minor and crimes against nature.

Between 2009 and 2011 authorities report Edwards molested at least three boys between the ages of 11 and 14. At least one of the incidents allegedly occurred in Edward's office while the victim's parent sat in a nearby waiting area.

Edwards had been the principal of  Douglas Byrd Middle School in Fayetteville, N.C. since 2010.  He resigned in August of this year.  Prior to that, Edwards was principal of Ramsey Street Alternative School.  Officials believe that all of the sexual assaults took place at  these two schools. However, the Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna told the Fayetteville Observer they suspect Edwards had more than 3 victims.

The school system has said that when Edwards resigned, they were unaware there was a pending investigation. He claimed he was leaving for educational opportunities.
